About Shaggy Wood Fern
The Shaggy Wood Fern, scientifically known as Dryopteris atrata, is a striking and hardy fern that adds a touch of elegance to any shaded garden space. This fern is particularly admired for its glossy fronds that emerge in a rich green hue and deepen to almost black as they mature, providing a beautiful contrast against lighter foliage in the garden.
The Shaggy Wood Fern is well-adapted to cooler climates and thrives in shaded or partially shaded areas, making it an excellent choice for woodland gardens, shaded borders, or as an underplanting for trees and shrubs. It’s a slow grower, which makes it manageable and easy to incorporate into a variety of garden settings.
The Dryopteris atrata prefers a moist, well-drained soil and benefits from regular watering, especially during dry spells. Mulching around the base of the plant helps to retain soil moisture and keeps the roots cool, ensuring the fern remains healthy and lush throughout the growing season.
At Prickle, we're passionate about helping you nurture every plant in your garden. If you have any questions, don't hesitate to reach out to us @prickleplantsuk.
